Dr. Bilal Philips
Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada. He is an Islamic Scholar who accepted the message of Islam in 1972. He completed a B.A in Islamic Studies at the University of Madeenah, and an MA in Islamic Theology in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1994 Dr. Bilal completed a Ph.D in Islamic Theology in the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, UK.
He has written, translated and commented on over 50 published books on various Islamic topics, as well as edited and published the 56-book Eemaan reading series for children. He has also presented Islamic programs for many years on; Riyadh Channel 2 TV, Sharjah TV, Peace TV, Huda TV, Islam Channel, and the Deen Show.
Dr. Bilal is the Dean of the Islamic Online University. He is also the Director of PERF (Professional Education and Research Foundation), and Supervising Director of Preston International College (www.prestonchennai.ac.in) and Al-Fajr International School (www.al-fajrinternational.com), Chennai, India.
Having graduated from four countries (Pakistan, Japan, Holland and UK) and worked in two continents (Asia and Europe), Dr Ahsan is a distinguished research scholar. Presently based in England, he has over two and half decades’ experience of research, teaching and training in various capacities. In the fields of education, development studies and globalisation, his research has gained international recognition.
In addition to authoring several books, Dr Ahsan has produced a large number of reports and research papers published in various refereed international journals. He has extensively travelled and delivered a large number of lectures in various international conferences and seminars. He has also delivered numerous lectures and online training on academic research, writing and publishing.
His most recent publication is: Academic Research, Writing and Publishing – A Practical Handbook for PhD Students and Academic Researchers. In addition to his multi-dimensional academic and professional background, one of Dr Ahsan’s research focuses has also been on issues related to international political economy, human (under-)development and human (in-)security in the contemporary Muslim World. His thoughts have influenced in fixing priorities and directions for the Muslim World. His research has also been a part of the curricula of various universities around the world.
Professor Dr. G.Hussein Rassool has a PhD in Psychology and Education (University of London), MSc in Health Education and a BA in Psychology. He is an international consultant and facilitator with proven expertise in mental health and addiction. He is currently working as an academic advisor, lecturer in psychology, independent consultant in addiction and mental health and Clinical Consultant/Executive Director of Sakina Counselling Institute & Research.
He also works part-time as an Islamic psychotherapist. Dr. G.Hussein Rassool has been a visiting professor of psychology of addiction and mental health at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. His previous experience was as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Addictive Behaviour & Psychological Medicine, St George’s Hospital Medical School (University of London), England where he developed many unique academic programmes. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health and served as News Editor/Editorial Board Member of international journals in the UK, USA and Brazil.
He is an author /editor of eight books and has published over 100 papers and reviews. Some of his published books are Cultural Competence in Caring for Muslim Patients; Addictive Behaviours: Theory & Clinical Practice, Alcohol and Drug Misuse, and Dual Diagnosis. His forthcoming publications include Health Psychology from an Islamic Perspective (Based on the Qur’aan and Sunnah) (International Islamic Publishing House, Riyadh); Islamic Counselling: An Introduction (Taylor & Francis); Addictive Behaviours: The Disease and its Cure-An Islamic Perspective (International Islamic Publishing House, Riyadh).
Abu Yahya Mansoor Danish has an 8 years work experience in the financial services sector. His longest stint was with HSBC Bank where he won several accolades for his performance. In 2012, he took a break from his work life to pursue higher studies and did his MBA from the prestigious Globsyn Business School, Kolkata. At GBS, he won the Best Speaker award in 2013 and in the same year was conferred with the title ‘Best Manager‘ by India‘s oldest and most reputable business school-IISWBM amidst competition from participants representing XLRI Jamshedpur and IIM Kolkata. His dissertation is on Conventional Banking and Islamic Banking which he has undertaken under Professor Dr. Prithwiraj Banerjee.
In addition to the above, he is a Lecturer and Supervisor- Islamic Banking & Economics Department at Islamic Online University and received his public speaking and da‘wah skills training under Shaykh Arshad Basheer Madani (AskIslampedia) and Brother Ateeq Ahmed, a student of Dr. Zakir Naik.
Mansoor is actively involved in Islamic activities and is a consultant to Iqra International School, Bangalore. He is an active proponent of organizations adopting an Islamic Social Responsibility model or the ISR model (much like the CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility) focusing on relentless social service and creating a platform for doing da‘wah. His lectures focus on our Muslim youth, he discusses youth issues and how young muslims can develop proper Islamic etiquette. He also conducts a unique workshop entitled ‘Heroes of Islam‘ that focuses on motivating the youth and helping them find a good role model. This is a series of workshop which also focuses on building eeman and making a Muslim feel proud of his identity. Mansoor was recently awarded with a ‘Certificate of Appreciation‘ for his da‘wah pursuits by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Distribution, Dubai.
Shaykh Ismail Kamdar is the Faculty Manager of the Islamic Online University. He is also the founder of Islamic Self Help.com, and the author of several books. He also writes articles for multiple magazines and websites including IOU Insights and Al-Ummah Magazine, and homeschools his four children. He holds a BAIS from the Islamic Online University, as well as a traditional Alim Degree, and is currently working towards his Masters in Islamic Studies.
Muhammad Ashraf Petersen is from the beautiful city of Cape Town. After completing his schooling in South Africa he went travelling abroad in pursuit of knowledge. His first stop in his quest for knowledge was then known as the Arab Social Republic of Libya from where he did a diploma in Arabic. Thereafter he had the privileged of moving on to the renowned Al Azhar University where he completed the Al Azhar secondary school. After completing Al Azhar Secondary school, it was his dream come true when he got accepted at the prestige Islamic University of Madina. At the Islamic University of Madina he completed a Arabic diploma before he entered the facility of Shariah and graduated with a BA degree. After that he did a higher diploma in Qadaa wa Siya’sa as’Shariya at the same university.
Currently he os a second year masters degree student at the Islamic University of Madina majoring in comparative jurisprudence.
Kamil Ahmad holds a BA in Shariah from the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, and a post-graduate Diploma in Da`wah from the faculty of Da`wah & Usul-ud-Din. Currently, he is pursuing an MA in Aqeeda from Qassim University.

Yusuf Gassiep (Abu Hamza) was born in 1981 and raised in Manenberg on the Cape Flats. After completing high school he performed Hajj in 1999 and then travelled to Egypt to meet up with his hifth teacher from Cape Town who at the time was also in Egypt pursuing higher studies. It was in the dusty city of Cairo where he spent the following 9 years of his life enrolled at the Al Azhar Institute and later majored in Hadith at the Al Azhar University’s faculty of Usoolu Deen. He attended the classes of many of the Ulamah in cairo at the various mosques of Jamaat Ansaru Sunah Al Muhamadeyah. Some of his teachers are Dr Mohammed Yousri, Sheikh Shareef Husain Abdul Qadir, Sheikh Tariq ibn Iwadullah, Sheikh Osama Sulaiman ,and Dr Omar Abdul Azeez .He also attended the monthly lectures of Sheikh Mustafa Al Adawi.
He had the opportunity of attending the lectures of Sheikh Safwat Nurudeen (rahimahu ALLAH) , Sheikh Abi Ishaq Al Huwaini and Sheikh Mohammed Hassan whenever they visited Cairo.
He also completed the Fajr Centre Arabic courses and pursued the Khitaba course offered by the Fajr Centre. One of the first books he ever bought as a student of knowledge was Sheikh ibn Uthaymeen’s (rahimahu ALLAH) Explanation of Al Aqeedah Al Wasitiyah and since then he developed a great love for Sheikh ibn Uthaymeens work’s.
On his return to South Africa in 2008, he was offered a post as an English teacher in Buraidah Saudi Arabia. He then travelled to Saudi Arabia and worked there till January 2011. During his stay there he was involved with the Buraidah Dawa Centre and was a Hajj guide for new Muslims.
In 2011 he became the first Imam of the Town Centre Mosque in Cape Town South Africa. Currently, he is an instructor at the Al huda foundation which offers short courses on various topics.
Imad Lagardien holds a Bachelor degree in Islamic Studies from Islamic University of Madina, K.S.A. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Education from UNISA and teaching at Dar al Waqaf.
Laja Yasini began his studies of Islam at the age of 7 at the local madrasah in Gweru Zimbabwe where he later became an Imam. In 2002, he was accepted to study at the main Darool Uloom in Zimbabwe: Darool Uloom Waterfalls.
In 2005, he received a scholarship to continue his studies at the Islamic University of Madinah where he obtained a Diploma in Arabic, Thaanawiya certificate and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sharia.
He is active in da’wah both locally and internationally. He is a site operator for an online da’wah website (chatislamonline.org), head of the Da’wah Department of the Islamic Information Services of Zimbabwe, chairman for Gabriel of Hope Da’wah Foundation, Imaam and khateeb for the Zeenatoel Islam Masjid in Bulawayo Zimbabwe, and a member of the Bulawayo Muslim Association.
Currently, he is pursuing his L.L.B Degree (Bachelor of Laws) at the University of South Africa while furthering his Sharia degree with a Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies (I.O.U).
Khalid Mahamad received a Master of Science in Education and credited with an Ontario Teaching License and a New York State Teaching License. He has obtained an international TEFL license, certifying him to teach English as a foreign language to English Language Learners. He has previously been employed by the Waterloo Region District School Board and Abu Dhabi Education Council. Beyond these school boards, he has extensive experience within the private sector of education. Within the Greater Toronto Area he was entrusted to overlook the implementation of curriculum and modify curriculum to suit Muslim learners.
Luqman Plato hails from the shores of Cape Town, South Africa. He always had a sense of enthusiasm to study the religion of Islam. After completing his secondary education, he furthered his studies at the Darul Arqam Institute, where he learnt basic Islamic Studies and Arabic; it was at that point in time, he developed a love for the Arabic Language.
He studied at the Islamic University of Madina, completing the two-year Arabic diploma course, and thereafter graduated from the Faculty of Arabic Language in 2012.
He is currently an Arabic Instructor for the Ummul Qura Institute in Cape Town, and conducts classes in Fiqh, Hadeeth, Qur’Än Reading and Tafseer at various schools.
He is also a Khateeb and is well known for reciting the Qur’Än at mosques all around the Cape.
Shaibu Asali has an MA in Fiqh from the Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar. He graduated from the Islamic University of Medina with a degree in Sharee’ah. Br. Shaibu worked as an Imam at the Ardbennie Mosque in Harare, Zimbabwe. Then, he migrated to Lesotho where he worked as an Arabic-English translator at the Libyan embassy. Currently, he is involved in da’wah in his country, Zimbabwe. Moreover, he is engaged in online da’wah and works to translate Islamic books into English.
Farhan Karmali comes from Mumbai , India. A computer geek at heart, Farhan also has a passion for Islamic Studies and Dawah . Having obtained his Masters of Computer Application degree , Farhan now pursues BA in Islamic Studies at IOU. He works as a Virtual Learning Environment developer for IOU managing various Moodle instances and is now teaching Computer 101 where he aims to equip students with computer skills which they can use for studying Islam and spreading it.
Farhan has been involved in the Moodle community for over 3 years both as an administrator and a developer. Being a technology enthusiast he loves e-Learning and web technologies and how they can be used for the sake of Islam. Farhan has helped setup and customize a number of Moodle websites, He is a freelance eLearning consultant. He regularly reviews books and courses published at packtpub.com. Farhan has also worked as a Moodle consultant for a leading elearning company in Mumbai.
Having completed his dawah training from IRF in 2009 , Farhan has been attached with various dawah organizations across Mumbai , He conducts workshops related to socio-islamic life skills for teenagers and teaches playful children at weekend Islamic classes.
Farhan loves playing games and has recently started developing Islamic Learning apps for Android which are available for free download.
Dr. Nissar Ahmad Yatoo completed a Ph.D. in Finance with specialization in Islamic Finance in the Department of Banking Technology at the Pondicherry University. During his Ph.D., he presented and published papers mostly in the area of Islamic finance. Dr. Nissar also attended and participated in various international conferences, workshops and refresher courses in the area of finance. He holds a Master of Finance and Control (MFC) from the Department of Business and Financial Studies, University of Kashmir; a Post Graduate Diploma in Statistics and Research Methodology (PGDSRM) from Department of Statistics, Pondicherry University; a B.Sc and a B.Ed from the University of Kashmir.
Dr. Nissar has an extensive coordinating and lecturing experience in the areas of accounting, banking and finance.
Hunain Aijaz started his career in the Islamic Online University as a volunteer in 2008. He was the course creator and facilitator of various courses of the free Diploma section from 2008 to 2010.
He was appointed as the BAIS coordinator in February 2010 and later promoted to be the academic coordinator of the entire institution.
As an academic coordinator, Hunain Aijaz is primarily responsible for providing administrative support and planning required for the operation of the university’s academic programs and services, providing training support for the new employees at all levels and liaising with the academic staff with respect to any academic issues.
He graduated from the University of Karachi in 2010 and majored in: Islamic Studies, Islamic History, and Political Science.

Apart from having knowledge of various Islamic subjects, Brother Hunain Aijaz holds an extensive experience and knowledge of online education, academic affairs, student support, LMS and system development, etc.
In March 2014, Brother Hunain Aijaz was awarded Star Award for Excellent Academic for preparation of Spring 2014 semester at the Islamic Online University by the vice chancellor, Sameer Khan.
Hannah Morris is originally from the UK, but is currently living in Ireland. She converted to Islam in January 2007, is married with 4 children and is working as a Muslim Youth Counsellor for the Islamic Online University. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Masters in Health Psychology and is currently completing her diploma in Islamic studies at the IOU. She has over 10 years of experience working in health and social care settings in the UK, USA and Ireland. She has primarily worked in secure psychiatric hospitals housing adults with enduring mental health problems and forensic histories, and in residential settings for children and adolescents with behavioural and emotional difficulties.
Sr. Bela Khan is a certified life coach, speaker, and author. She is pursuing a Master in Psychology and holds an M.Phil Degree in Microbiology. Furthermore, she is the founder of Muslim Women Empowerment, an institute that empowers women to move past their challenges and lead a life of purpose.
Sr. Bela is a lifelong learner. She has many certifications in the field of leadership, success, and human behavior from leading institutes of the world. Additionally, she has completed her Bridge Diploma in Islamic Studies from the Islamic Online University as well as diplomas in Quran Tafseer and Hadith Course from Pakistan.
Teaching the concepts of psychology and human behavior in the light of divine principles of Islam is her specialty. She conducts personal development workshops and training to help people take their lives to next level and become better versions of themselves.
Mubeena Ifthikkar is an Indian residing in the UAE. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Education and also holds a BMAIS degree in Islamic Studies from Islamic Online University. She had worked as a teacher in the faculty of Science, UK curriculum in Dubai. After completing her education in Islamic Sciences, from an Islamic Institute in Dubai she has been teaching Tafseer in the same Institute since 2009. Currently, apart from being an assistant lecturer in the Education Department she is also a course facilitator for the diploma section of IOU.
Being an amateur artist, she loves to spend her free time engaged in art and also in reading.
